Environment Agency Bench Marks
This site is provided to allow people to record their finds of benchmarks installed by the Environment Agency, its forerunner the National Rivers Authority,
and other similar organisations such as water authorities. If you've used the
Search facility to check the mark is not already recorded in this website, you may add details of such benchmarks (
not Ordnance Survey marks) using the
Report a BM form, including uploading images. Note that all content is reviewed by a moderator so it may be a day or two before reports are visible.
The benchmarks appear to be of two standard designs, with bolts installed on horizontal surfaces like Ordnance Survey bolts and rivets, and studs on
vertical surfaces with functionality akin to Ordnance Survey flush bracket benchmarks. The benchmarks are levelled referenced to Ordnance Survey
Newlyn Datum, the standard definition of zero height above mean sea level established in 1921.
The Environment Agency summarises their benchmarks as
“
Environment Agency Control Stations (EACS) or Benchmarks (EABMs) have
been created since the 1990s for use as survey control for Environment Agency projects. Control stations are fixed locations in the country which
have been accurately surveyed using GPS / GNSS data. Our control stations are often near Environment Agency structures and they are used as reference
heights for many different types of surveys which are carried out near the control stations. The control stations are graded with different levels
of accuracy due to the varied survey techniques that were used in establishing the points.

A map showing the locations of the EABM is available
here.
These pages include a search facility to find EABMs by location (including interactive results mapping) with a form to report your own finds, and a contact
form for general contact regarding EABMs and related artefacts. If you're a Facebook member, you may also like to visit the
Finding Environment Agency Benchmarks group on
Facebook.
The site is very much a work in progress; features are being added all the time, as are the locations and details of further benchmarks - so watch this
space, and let me know if there's more you would like to see.
